2.The Cask of Amontillado is a tale of revenge. Montresor, the sinister narrator of this tale, pledges revenge upon Fortunato for an insult. Montresor intends to seek vengeance in support of his family motto: "Nemo me impune lacessit."("No one assails me with impunity.")
3.The main characters of “The Cask of Amontillado” are Montresor and Fortunato. Montresor is the narrator and a wealthy man intent on receiving revenge on Fortunato who is both a friend sworn enemy of Montresor's. He has planned to ''punish with impunity.
Fortunato is addicted to wine. He's already really drunk when he meets Montresor,
According to Montresor, Fortunato [round and dynamic] is a man who has caused him a "thousand injuries"
Montresor [flat and static] is a man obsessed with revenge. He also seems to be rather insecure and sensitive, especially about his family background.
4.The irony that lies behind Fortunato's name is that the basic root word of his name is "Fortun" as in fortune, indicating luck, success or prosperity when Fortunato is the actual victim in the story.
